The theft of household pets in Germany was the focal point of our
research. Several animal dealers were traced. We consider investigation
of the theft of household pets to be particularly important as this is
clear expression of the value placed in our animals by the politicians.
In law the theft of a dog or cat is still considered to be a
misdemeanour despite the fact that it causes much sorrow for the animal
and the people who lose their beloved pet. Whereas the Federal German
government in general has remained at a distance to subjects such as fur
and leather imports, as well as the theft of pets, one politician has
earned recognition; Dr. Gerdi Staiblin of the Ministry for the
Countryside in Stuttgart. She has become deeply engaged in the fight
against the theft of household pets - on the left is her letter to the
Minister of the Interior of the Province of Baden-Württemberg. This is
not the first time that Dr. Staiblin has appeared in a positive light,
back in 1998 she arranged a meeting between representa5tives of Animal
Network
and the Farmer's Associations in which we were provided with an
opportunity for objective discussions on the subjects of animal
transports and the husbandry of so-called "domestic" animals.
